The building is set away from the public area, on the edge of the construction zone to allow a large view to the south. At some distance from the public area, the building branches out on the land and the various units capture the different lights of the day. These volumes also provide various open spaces adapted to the seasonal changes. The whole structure provides a single inner space open in all directions. It creates a shelter and the boundaries with the outside become blurred.

It is a 4,500 square foot urban infill house in Ottawa’s planned Lindenlea community, adjacent to the city’s “old money community of Rockcliffe Village.” As the kidney-shaped site is wedged between the parking lot of the community centre to the southwest and a forested 40-foot escarpment to the north, it presented unique challenges and opportunities to coordinate views with desires for light. The primary glazed façade was therefore oriented north thus ensuring privacy on the south side while allowing the space to be filled with diffused light. This orientation also addresses concerns about overheating in the summer. Vertical windows along the south allow streams of sunlight to reach deep within the house and obscure undesirable views of the parking lot.”

So the architects created with a linear design that has picked up on the building form – the ‘long cottage’ found along Iken Common, and one can see the design as an evolution of the longitudinal cottage. The site is located in Suffolk two miles inland from Aldeburgh, and lies within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The site itself forms part of an overall land ownership of 2.5ha surrounded by agricultural land.

Recycling a single story suburban house located on a busy corner site, Jigsaw introverts itself in a continous spatial flow around an open air courtyard carved from the home’s remains. Fundamental to the conception of the house is the notion of reflectivity, rendering unclear the boundaries between inside and outsite. Light and space are modulated by meshing ribbons of wall and glass that form a tessellation of solid and void. The conditioning of these internal and external walls is identical. Planes of stucco exterior walls transform into plaster interior walls while passing through glass. Clerestory glazing and window constructs are carefully sited to afford privacy to the occupants while framing and extending views through the site.

Designers and architects have been using this technology for a long time, but to our knowledge this is the first free app of its kind.

The appeal of this app is obvious – according to Carl Griffenkranz, vice president of marketing for Granite Transformations, “one of the biggest remodeling hurdles for many homeowners is trying to visualize what the new room will look like in their home.” It appears that the main advantages are that customers can spend as much time as they want perfecting the design they want, and the end result will more closely match their original concept.

In addition, the iGranite app allows users to share their designs and see pre-designed kitchens and bathroom by Granite Transformations.

Unfortunately, iGranite is only available as an app, significantly limiting the number of people that have access to it. Another downside is that users are constricted to using only Granite Transformations’ designs and patterns. However this is their first release and they are planning another one in spring that will include a custom mosaic tile designer.
